Will the EU be ready for all packaging to be sustainable by 2030? Presented by the Alliance for Beverages Cartons and the Environment.

This event will be held virtually

The European Commission wants to get rid of wasteful packaging with the aim to become carbon neutral by 2050. In its Circular Economy Action Plan, it committed to improving and increasing the reusability and recyclability of packaging materials, as well as reducing packaging waste. In order to reach these goals, the executive body is currently exploring a set of mandatory criteria and requirements.

Recyclers are asking the Commission for clearer rules and standards on packaging to help improve reusability and recyclability. Meanwhile, the packaging industry is concerned about a new levy based on the amount of non-recycled plastic waste that could be implemented as soon as 2021.

Key questions to be addressed include:
• How can the EU’s circular economy goals contribute to making packaging more sustainable?
• How can the industry help optimize the design of packaging with the aim of easing recycling and using fewer resources? And can the sector contribute to a low carbon circular economy?
• Does a shift back to single-use packaging in light of the coronavirus pandemic make sense?
• What will be the impact of the plastic tax on the packaging industry? Will it encourage the use of other materials?
• How could the EU improve the traceability and transparency on chemicals in food contact materials?

As the Commission is expected to present a set of mandatory criteria and requirements to make all packaging reusable and recyclable by 2030, POLITICO convenes a high-level debate with experts about sustainable packaging and its contribution to a low carbon circular economy.
